Latest travel information

Travel to Dhamma Sukhakāri might be affected due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Please refer to your course confirmation letter regarding travel arrangements and make sure you have the latest travel information.

  • Make sure that the Covid-19 guidelines in your local area will allow you to travel and that you will not be in breach of them by attending a course.
  • If you are travelling to the course by public transport, please follow government guidance at all times.
  • The UK government requires those arriving in the UK from certain countries to self-isolate for 14 days after their arrival. This self-isolation cannot be carried out at the meditation centre. If you are planning to arrive in the UK from a country not on the government’s exemption list within 14 days of your arrival at the centre, please cancel your application.  

Arriving and departing

All students are asked to arrive between 2 and 5 pm on the day the course begins. After registration is completed, a light meal and orientation will precede the start of the course. The ten-day courses will end at approximately 7:30 am on the last day of the course. The three-day courses end at 4 pm. All new students, as well as old (returning) students taking a full course, are required to remain until the very end of the course. Part-time old students will not be permitted to leave on metta day, the last full day, except in case of emergency or by prior arrangement with the assistant teacher(s).

IMPORTANT: Please make all your homeward travel arrangements before the course starts. You will not be able to use your mobile phone, iPad, tablet or any other internet device until the end of the course.

IMPORTANT: If your arrival is delayed beyond 6 pm please leave a message on the Dhamma Sukhakāri centre answer machine, 01449 833080. If you do not do this, it will be assumed that that you are not coming, and your place may be given to someone else.

IMPORTANT: Please do not arrive at the centre before 6:30 am or after 10 pm and, with the exception of the day a course begins, preferably not between 8 and 9 am, 2:30 and 3:30 pm or 6 and 7 pm.

By car

Dhamma Sukhakāri is 2.5 miles (4 km) from Junction 49 of the A14 between Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds, about 100 miles to the north-east of London.

The best postcode to get you to the centre is IP14 3RQ.

There is ample free parking at the centre.

By train

The site is 4 miles from Stowmarket railway station and there are frequent direct train services to and from London, Norwich, Cambridge, Ipswich and Peterborough.

Direct trains from London Liverpool Street take approximately 90 minutes. Alternatively, take a train to Ipswich and change to the next available Stowmarket train.

Travel from the station

Please do not attempt to walk to the centre from Stowmarket or Haughley. The road appears small on the map but it can be busy and fast with no lighting or pavement/off-road walking area.

A taxi from the station takes about 10 minutes and costs approximately £10.

Students arriving for the start of a course may wish to share a taxi to the centre with others arriving at the station. Taxis are usually available without booking from the Stowmarket Cab Co. office situated just outside the station, though you may have to wait for one to become available. We suggest using the taxi office as a meeting point, from where you can arrange a shared cab.

By air

The most convenient airport for Dhamma Sukhakāri is London Stansted (STN), to which there are budget flights from a wide range of European destinations.

From London Stansted airport, take a direct train to Cambridge and change for a direct train to Stowmarket, or take a coach to Chelmsford and then a train to Stowmarket (journey time about 1 hour 40 minutes).

The car journey is about 1 hour 10 minutes to London Stansted.

Other convenient airports

  • Norwich International (NWI): take the airport bus to the Park & Ride, from there take a bus to Norwich railway station and then a direct train to Stowmarket (journey time 1 hour 20 minutes)

  • London City (LCY): take the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) to Stratford International and change for National Rail from Stratford to Stowmarket (journey time about 1 hour 45 minutes)

  • Southend (SEN): take a bus or a train to Chelmsford (by train, change at Shenfield) and from there a train to Stowmarket (journey time about 2 hours 30 minutes)

  • Luton (LTN): take the airport shuttle to Luton Airport Parkway railway station, take a fast train to London St Pancras, take the London Underground (Circle and Metropolitan lines) to Liverpool Street station and then take a National Rail service to Stowmarket (journey time about 3 hours).

Return journey

At the end of the course, you may be able to get a lift by car with other students.

You may also be able to share a local taxi to the station with other people. More information will be put up on the last day of the course, when you will be able to make arrangements, including booking a taxi.
